CityScapes

Product Design & Development

Overview

Home and office dashboard which displays realtime weather, time, and traffic status of a city

The Problem

Busy individuals find it troublesome and inefficient to toggle between different apps to check traffic, time, and other essential city status.

Objective

Provide a centralized interface for users to view essential information and status about a city in an integrated view quickly.

Research

Personas were created to define the target audience and identify user needs. After creating personas, the engineering team was briefed and updated on user pain points, wants, and needs.

Persona Winston Meyer
Persona Julia Pointe
Persona James

Findings

Through these personas, we found these pain points:

  • Checking weather, traffic, and time on the phone is inconvenient. They are all located in different areas on the phone

  • Using their phone to check is distracting with constant notifications

We found that users wanted:

  • A dashboard with basic city status

  • Traffic or public transportation status

  • A simple layout without distracting elements

Product Development

Once user needs were defined, rough product sketches were created to visualize the product. During this process, we explored different ways of showing information. After feedback from the engineering team, the sketches were reiterated based on the feedback.

Products Requirement Document

After ideating and sketching, a comprehensive Product Requirements Document (PRD) was established to define full product scope.

The PRD was created following the MoSCoW method (Must have, Should have, Could have, Won't have), to determine the importance of each feature. Within the Must have, I further defined functional and non functional requirements. Additionally, each requirement was defined with a detailed rationale as to why the function was necessary.

Design Solution

After defining the scope, it was established that the dashboard would be a low-tech dashboard with no screens. Without the use of screens, it would be easier to glance at quickly without eye strain and without distracting the user.

Functions include:

  • Traffic status or public transportation status

  • Time

  • Weather

  • Air quality index

  • 3-day weather forecast.

Final Visualizations

Several illustrations were created to visualize the product in different use case scenarios.

Design Impact

This project is projected to impact users by providing them with information at one quick glance. It provides users with efficiency and saves time through traffic status updates.
